Growing up I felt like the only person that actually celebrated Kwanzaa. My dad was a part of that post MLK pack of preachers that felt like they were saving Black people one sermon at a time.
My father may not have done that, but he did instil some cultural gems on me, one of which was celebrating Kwanzaa. A secular holiday aimed at celebrating seven principles at the center of community building for Soulaan people.
Let’s hop into today’s principle, shall we?
🤮Umoja🤮
Umoja is a Swahili word meaning “unity”. This day represents community holding itself in wholeness. Powers have continually worked to rip Soulaan people apart from each other through homophobia, class politics, and more. Umoja tells us we should always be striving to unify ourselves through understanding.
This does not mean sacrificing yourself for the sake of coming together with others. No, it means taking the space we need to understand one another so we may more entirely show up for all our people.
Light the center black candle and think about how you choose to exemplify unity within ur immediate communities.
Happy Kwanzaa! I’ll see you again tomorrow.
This is something I have been trying to get my family to do but I see it's ok to do this alone. Thank you for sharing...
Lit my black candle this morning 🫶🏾 Thank you!!
